Milarki's Biggest Update Yet, And It's Free

Kim Sellstedt

We've been doing a lot of thinking about where Milarki is headed, and we've made some big moves. This is the largest update we've ever shipped. Most of the work happened under the hood, but there's plenty you'll notice right away.

Milarki is Now Free

Let's start with the big one: we're dropping the paywall. All of it. Every part of Milarki is now free for everyone. No premium tier, no locked features.

Why? Because we'd rather have a thriving community than a gated one. Milarki was built for the Age of Sigmar community, and the best thing we can do is let people in. No strings attached.

If you want to support us (and we'd love that), you still can through our subscription. Think of it like buying us a round at the pub after a good game night. It keeps the lights on and helps us build more cool stuff, but it's never a requirement.

Easier Ways to Join

We're also making it way simpler to get started. You can now sign in with Google, Facebook, and other services you already use. No more creating yet another account with yet another password you'll forget in a week.

Install It as an App

Milarki now works as a Progressive Web App. In plain terms, that means you can install it on your phone or tablet straight from your browser. No app store needed. It'll look and feel like a real app: full screen, fast loading, and with a proper app icon on your home screen.

On mobile, you'll see an install button in the header. On desktop, your browser should offer to install it from the address bar. Tap it, and you're done.

Push Notifications

Once you have the app installed, you can turn on push notifications to stay in the loop. Battles, tournaments, club activity, whatever matters to you. You choose exactly what you want to be notified about in your notification settings, and each option now has a clear description of what it does.

No more missing that tournament reminder or your mate's battle result.

A Better Mobile Experience

We've gone through every page and polished how things look and work on mobile. Tabs scroll smoothly with visual indicators. Buttons and touch targets are properly sized. Modals close when they should. Tournament pairing tables are actually readable. Army cards don't flicker. The calendar works properly.

It's a long list of small things that add up to a much better experience on your phone.

Under the Hood

For those who like to peek behind the curtain: we consolidated our entire backend from around 40 distributed libraries into a single, well-organised Firebase Functions app. We migrated our styling from SCSS modules to Tailwind CSS, upgraded to Next.js 16, and updated our rich text editor and component library to their latest versions. On top of that, the team went through the app systematically and tackled a long list of edge cases, visual inconsistencies, and small annoyances.

These changes don't add flashy new features, but they make the platform significantly more maintainable and set the stage for what's coming next.

What's Next

We have some exciting things planned, but we'll share more about that when the time comes. For now, we hope you enjoy a faster, cleaner, and completely free Milarki.

See you on the battleground.
